Ottmar Hitzfeld In Talks With Newcastle?

February 13th, 2006 by Alan Hylands

Despite weekend rumours of Martin O’Neill taking over as Graeme Souness’s successor as Newcastle United manager, former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has allegedly arrived in Newcastle to begin talks with the Newcastle board about the position.

One of Germany’s most successful club coaches of all time, Hitzfeld has led both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to Champion’s League success as well as winning several Bundesliga titles with Germany’s big two clubs.

Although he has been out of the game for the past 18 months, it is believed that the tough, authoritarian German would relish the task of revitalising the struggling North East giant’s fortunes where he would bring a reputation for dealing ruthlessly with big name stars as well as winning major trophies.

If it’s true that Hitzfeld is about to become the Toon manager then all I can say is Yipee

  2. Alan Hylands Says:

Proven track record as a big winner not only in Germany but also in the Champion’s League and I’d say he’d be a far superior choice than Martin O’Neill. Martin’s a good guy but his managerial reputation has been built on moderate success with a workman-like Leicester side and a sharing of the spoils in Scotland with Celtic which isn’t quite the masterful job some have cracked it up to be.

Do you think Alan Shearer would welcome the tough love Hitzfeld would almost certainly dish out to some senior Newcastle players?

  3. Saleem Akbar Says:

Hitzfeld is a point in the right direction. We need him! He will surely sort out the back four and make us play better football and riddance to those who can not fight for the black and white cause.

    Its about time :)

Lets hope its not just a possibility but the start of someting special at St James Park.

  5. Dave Says:

I hope this is true. However, the Toon have a history of disappointing at the death. Let’s hope Shepherd get it right this time

  6. Arron Says:

if Hitzfeld came we would be one of the ultimate he would be ace please let him come Newcastle

Hopes to Hitzfeld, I think he would do a great job!

As much as I would love to believe it, the word that stands out more than any other is “allegedly”. I fear that Shepherd may have already made up his mind that Martin O’Neill will be our next manager. If this turns out to be true then I think he’s missed a glorious chance to sign one of the best club managers on the planet. His record speaks for itself. I don’t get this Martin O’Neill thing. He did an average job at Leicester and was manager of one of the two teams who were guaranteed to finish first or second in a very average league. Come on Fred, if you really have any ambition to see your club challenge for success at the highest level, get on the phone to Hitzfeld NOW!

I so much hope this is true. This could be the tranformation of Newcastle United back to the force it was under Bobby Robson, and then some.

Ottmar Hitzfeld has a proven record as a winner. A far superior option than Martin O Neill in my opinion.

  10. Jonathan Dewart Says:

Apparently the smart money for the Newcastle job is going on Bryan Robson… personally I think that’s rubbish!

Hitzfeld would of course be a great choice as manager for any club, I just think that Newcastle’s main problems are at the very top, and it will take a massive sea-change in the boardroom to sort the club out.

As for Martin O’Neill he ‘ll not be the next manager at St James’ for two reasons:
    (1) His wife’s ill-health makes it highly unlikely that he would take such a high-profile/stressful/time consuming role at the present time (the English post has just two of those problems)
    (2) He is a life-long Sunderland fan, and has previously vowed never to take anything to do with the Magpies!

Next boss for Newastle then? Shearer/Roeder/ Dean Saunders/Steve Clarke/Peter Beardsley/Glenn Hoddle? Frankly, your guess is as good as mine, although Gazza is looking to get back into management!

  11. Steve Says:

Hitzfeld has been approached by Newcastle United and has had high level contact, he’s in with a good chance and is close to giving a firm decision to Mr Shepherd.
