Kudos to David Fox for daring to write the article. Like someone on one of the comment said, the reason for any football articles are to solicit intelligent discourse. So I hope this site continues to write thought provoking articles that dare to challenge the current thinking.

As for what constitute a big or small club...or best fans...we can all argue until the cows come home...but all of us, arsenal, spurs, toons or man u supporters would still visit this site. If any fans disagree with any articles written, they can post their own. I am sure the admin would allow articles that are not personal in nature to be posted here..if not you can always start another website to do it.

Well I for one truly enjoyed watching Newcastle play even though I am a Gunners supporters. If we talk about entertaining values, Newcastle in the new millenium definately beats everyone else. Bowyer vs Dyer, now that is a classic.

Having lived in the North East for 6 years the problem with Newcastle is nobody is as big a club as they think they are.

Is it really a proud boast to be one of the 5 biggest clubs in the Premier League and to have failed so spectacularly to win anything at all?

As for richest - sure if you measure wealth by debt.

Seriously, to argue Newcastle are not a big club is bizarre, huge support though I find it interesting they view themselves as so commited - where were the waiting lists for season tickets before John Hall got involved?. It also kind of defeats the object - much better to have a laugh at their expense because they are such a big club - just makes their failure to achieve funnier.

Well, well yet more sour twats on here belittling us for a label other people give us.
The best fans in the world thing is something that usually other people attribute to us and anyone going around claiming to be a 'superfan' should be taken with a pinch of salt.
I mentioned the fact that Porto, PSV etc. are more successful than us but who in their right mind would think they are bigger clubs than NUFC?
players leave clubs like that to come to us. simple as.
as a closing statement copy and paste the link, read the article and weep if you still don't think we're a big club because if this article you are about to read doesn't convince you then i suggest you run the premier league if you think you know more about what consitiutes a big club than it's ruling body.

My god? Is the rest of the country waking up to the great Geordie myth? Of course they have great support, but when you live in a unique catchment area of 1.5m (excluding Sunderland?s) then 52,000 each week is the minimum you would expect.

Your article asks why no one questioned Sheppard when he said they are one of the biggest clubs in the world, when the real question is why do the bar code clad geordies lap up his every word? The answer is simple. Tell them they are the biggest club, the best fans, and Owen didn?t sign because no other club wanted him, and the deluded love it, just love it. Remember, in Geordie world, to be a big club, you have to get big gates. To a real Geordie, counting empty seats at opposing grounds is much more enjoyable than counting trophy?s in your cabinet at the end of the season.

Let?s hope they never realise what the rest of the country (excluding the MOTD panel) really thinks, because without them, football would be a far less humorous place.

The fact that Geordies fork out the amounts they do, in spite of 51 years without a domestic trophy does them credit. Surely though, if they were as big an attraction to new managers, players that they say they are, they'd have been able to attract the personnel to bring them success by now.

Yes in terms of support, expectations, turnover and financial clout, they are a big club. They can't be that attractive a prospect to the management and playing staff needed to bring success, as they would have been able to recruit the right manager and players to bring them the success they crave.

Oh I forget they did have a decent manager a couple of years ago, but did the dirty on him.

Says it all....Toon fans bleating on above about "So a big club is only one that wins trophies?"

Well yes, outside of Newcastle that is the metric used.

Within Newcastle the only thing that matters is the size of the crowd....funny isn't it really, because I recall them giving it large when their neighbour had not won a cup, when they did, it was a mickey mouse cup....and one that does not matter! No, because size counts, I guess it is a reflection on their life experience, because looking at the size of the average geordie beer belly, how could you not be size concious?

Small Town in Europe.......read it and weep.
