The all conquering Celtic side built by Martin O'Neill comprised average Premiership players who weren't good enough to attract even the second tier of top clubs in England. Neil Lennon, John Hartson, Alan Thompson and Chris Sutton have all found great success north of the border while struggling to stand out in England. Barry Ferguson and Lorenzo Amoruso found the same when they left Rangers and in Ferguson's case, beat a hasty retreat back north of Hadrian's Wall. If I remember correctly, Gattuso wasn't even a regular starter as a young lad at Rangers and it's with a great deal of surprise that many Gers fans found him pulling the strings at the top level in the Milan midfield. I thin Schweinsteiger may find a bit of making up with Felix Magath would be his best career move right now if a move to the SPL is all that is on the table for him. Of all the big-name players who have been at Ibrox in the past twenty years, I can think of just one who has left and went on to greater things - Reno Gattuso. Countless strikers (Negri, Mols, Bo Andersson, even Hately) have made an impact on the SPL, but left for obscurity. Gascoigne and Laudrup (two of the most gifted players of their generations) may have been over the hill/crocked by the time they left, but others such as Dale Gordon and Mark Walters won countless medals with the 'Gers only to return to England in their prime and struggle (at West Ham and Liverpool respectively).
