Marching On Hopefully - Stupid Question For Leeds Fans
April 20th, 2006 by Ande SmallwoodAnde Smallwood is our new guest columnist for Marching On Hopefully, a Leeds United column
So we didn?t manage to gain automatic promotion, and a lot of people me included never thought we would get as far, but the chance for us to sneak in was there, unfortunately due to being unable to score for nearly 10 hours it was not to be, and we find ourselves thrust into a 4 team cup competition to try and muster our way to play against the big boys next season,
With our apparent success I have however been on the receiving end of one of the stranger questions in the world of football, do you want Leeds to be promoted? Now normally that wouldn?t even be a question, how many other teams? fans, do you know get asked if they want to play Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal, or travel to Plymouth, Ipswich and Hull? Not to mention the increased TV coverage and financial implications.
The problem is that a lot of people seem to think I should be worried that once, or should I say if, for the time being we were to get promoted will we find ourselves coming straight back down again, and I have to admit that yes that is a possibility, but one that is surely worth the risk. Peter Risdale is out and Ken Bates is in, meaning less spent on feeding fish and sensible decisions like not opening all the ground on a match day, as it wouldn?t fill, are put in place.
It may only be one season and we may end up with a record worse than Sunderland have managed this season, if that?s even possible, but it will be financially beneficial, who knows we may even resign Robbie Fowler, we are of course paying his wages anyway, so the answer is yes, of course I want Leeds to be promoted, do you want your team to stay in the same league and not get promotion, didn?t think so.

LEEDS ARE THE BIGGEST CLUB IN ENGLAND!

I think you make a fair point about the fact we could well come straight back down. However I believe that if we do go up we will not be coming straight back down for two reasons:
1. We have who i’d say to be one of the best up and coming managers england has to offer at the moment. Don’t forget Leeds was his first ever top dog role and look how hes done.
2. We actually have a chairman whos got a brain inside his head and can actually do the maths with real figures and not those of fantasy ridsdale! Yes Peter we did live the dream but its a pity u was dreaming when you thourght all the figures added up. Now we have a chairman who has shown he will back the manager and seem to get along so all I can see is good things coming back to elland road!!!
LONG LIVE THE WHITES!!!

I sincerly hope so, and once where there we will probably be able to stay there and hopefully build from there, what i’m worried about at the moment is that we may not be in the best form at the moment, to get through the Play-offs

Well. out of the four play-off bound Championship sides, and asides from it being Leeds (spit, ahem), I do hope that you get promoted (or possibly Palace).
Firstly, unlike the likes of Wolves (or even Reading and Sheffield United), Leeds are truly a BIG club, with a large and passionate support, and ground to match. It is good for the League when the biggest clubs are up, big away following, big crowds (usually, we’re not talking about the Theatre of Dreams here) mean a big atmosphere. Leeds, as a “name” club, should also beable to attract big(ish) international stars - finanaces permitting - which can only be good for the league as a whole, well better than second rate Latvians and Norwegians anyway.
Secondly, there would be the opportunity for one of my footballing heroes to get a proper chance at the highest level - Sir David Healy. One run-out for United does not do justice to one of the most sublime footballers I have ever witnessed (biased, me). So long as he is injury free and played up-front rather than the wing, I’m sure he can make an impact in the Premiership. A few thirty yarders and the world will know that 7th September 2005 was far from a one off!
But then Palace are managed by another legend, Big Iain Dowie… can he bring new vigour to the word bouncebackability?
