Sven, Wenger, Dein, Walcott, Real Madrid And the Conspiracy Theory
You all know that we don’t go in for conspiracy theories here at State of the Game, we know they rarely turn out to be true and when they go tits up they usually leave the theorist looking like a plank and completely devoid of any credibility.
Frankly we don’t care for idle chitchat and tittle tattle on most subjects but a good old Arsenal, Real Madrid, FA stitch up really gets our interest so here goes with the latest one that’s reaching us from Espana’s sunny shores.
It’s no secret that Real Madrid presidential candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir has his eye on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger but what’s been rumoured today is that instead of just trying to woo Mr Wenger, Villar has actually used his considerable clout and position as favourite to be elected as Real Madrid’s president to convince Arsene to agree to take over as Real Madrid coach if he wins the election on 2nd July.
David Dein has apparently not stood in Wenger’s way as he knows that he really wants to go and has already lined up his successor. Think about where we are going with this one folks: David Dein, FA, potential manager who was released from his very lucrative contract with nowhere to go in surprising circumstances. Put that all together and it spells (not literally) Sven Goran Eriksson as the new Arsenal manager.
Maybe that puts a whole new spin on why Sven took Theo Walcott to Germany with England even though he had absolutely no intention of playing the young lad under virtually any circumstances. I’d go so far as to say that if Sammy Lee has brought his boots with him then he’d stand a better chance of making the pitch for England in this World Cup. Why they did this is anyone’s guess and to be honest I still can’t fathom it on any level other than a brown envelope financial one. Answers on a postcard.
Is it so far fetched as to be unbelievable though? Real Madrid always get what they want. Always. If a presidential candidate says he will be signing a player or coach for definite once they win the election then they DO it. Anything else makes their position completely untenable. As for Sven to Arsenal, why not? He needs a new job, Arsenal would need a new big name coach as they move into Ashburton Grove and David Dein obviously appreciates Sven’s fine way with the ladies and is willing to fund his forays.
The more I think about this the more it sounds perfectly reasonable. Now I just need a bookie to take my money on it. Hello, is that Paddy Power?

ffs! get a life!
Errrr… NO… Wenger will not be going anywhere.
Lots of flaws in your argument.real Madrid did not get Vieira and in wenger you’re not dealing with the grubby chaps who normally inhabit football.Do you think he would have talked Henry into staying and then go himself?Or sign Rosicky?
Spanish papers are not only full of misinformation but the clubs actually use them to fly kites.Barcelona claimed several times publicly that they had signed Henry. No chance.
If Arsene wenger does leave Arsenal it won’t be in a beauty parade with Fabio capello.Go down to Paddy Power and invest. He gets rich on schmucks like you.
In some ways very plausible. However, there are a few rather truck sized holes in the logic:
- Why convince TH to stay when RM were one of his suitors?
- If AW so wants to go to RM, he’s had plenty of opportunities in the past, why now when he’s just about to move Arsenal into the new stadium that he’s been pivotal in bringing into existence?
- If Walcott can’t get a game for England, with the likes of Henry, Van Persie, Adebayor and possibly one of Klose, Torres or Saviola, what makes anyone think that he’ll get a game for Arsenal anytime soon?
- AW has always prided himself on never breaking contracts. Arsenal had to wait for his contract with Grampus 8 in Japan to expire before they got him – I don’t see AW’s attitude changing.
- Far from “If a presidential candidate says he will be signing a player or coach for definite once they win the election then they DO it” they always tell the members what they want to hear – Beckham to Barca (when Laporta was being elected)? Vieira to RM (before Perez’ last reelection)? This is no different – they are like politicians. Who would you trust – a politician or an honest man like Arsene Wenger?
Wenger was the one who pushed for a new stadium?? now he`s got it for the 2006-2007, season, so why oh why will he want to leave the best club with the newest best ground , ………… i ask?
real madrid should be shot back down again …..
just like the mighty Barcalona were with mr T, Henry…..
presidential candidates say they will sign a player to win they election, they very rarely sign the same one, laporta won the election at barca saying he would sign beckham but signed ronaldinho, not a club wenger would join, he likes managing a club not a team at madrid he wouldnt even be managing the team and would have a DoF above him
capello is likely since according to Dechamps he has been approached to take over at juventus
sven took theo to germany because wenger convinced him it would be good for his development and he could add something, sven got tricked for the better of arsenal not himself
Sigh? there is so much wrong this stupid rumour.
1) Real Madrid sign Wenger every year
2) Wenger had a huge input into the new stadium so he is hardly going to leave just yet.
3 ) after extending Henry?s contract he is hardly going to walk away
4) he has just signed Roskey
5) he is clearly building a squad for the future with all the young talent.
6) Real Madrid are mostly old talent passed their prime, why would he want to start from scratch again and build a new club when he hasn?t finished what he started at Arsenal
7) he has 2 years left on his contract
I cant be arsed with 8 ? 500, the rumour is to stupid to continue
I would rather chop off my bollocks then let sven be are manager
Sven as Arsenal manager….that’d be great for the rest of us in the Premiership, It’d be great to see him take a team full of talent and turn them into a one-dimensional side that’s much less than the sum of its parts (as he has with England). Still, it’s very unlikely.
I do not believe any of this… Wenger is not going any were…
BUT
If we ever see Wenger leave… the last guy I would like to see coming is Erickson.
Worst famous coach in the world!!!
With any other Coach England would be champion in this World Cup? with Erickson I?m not sure on getting to final week.
You need to see a psychologist.
I am one, by the way, and I charge more than you can afford. But I wouldn’t want to cure you. We need people like you for the entertainment value.
No doubt in my mind that this is 100% correct, but you have missed out a couple of key elements:
1. Abramovich has funded Villar Mir’s campaign and put up a sizeable “golden hello” for Wenger as he wants him out of the Prem.
2. You never see David Dein and Nancy Dell’Olio together as “Nancy” is actually DD’s alter ego.
David Dein is not on the FA. Where does that leave your theory.
Clues can be purchased on Isle 10.
Dein is still on the FA Council actually. The word you were looking for is “A”isle. Obviously Spelling can be located right next to the Clues.
Tequila – I think you’re onto something here, I mean has anyone ever seen DD and Nancy together? I haven’t so that’s good enough for me. These articles write themselves!
Paul – You must be a damn good psychologist if you find yourself getting a little angry and spiteful over what is quite clearly a windup article on a football website. Are you sure you’re a psychologist Paul and not just a schoolboy who thinks it’s cool to pretend he’s a big, grown up boy on the internet? I probably still couldn’t afford you so you’re right in that regard anyway
almost right
but i reckon mclaren was approached by dein who said that he would use his influence within the FA to get mclaren the england post if he could persuade sven to take a ‘financial incentive’ and include walcott in his squad. (just think how much walcott’s value will increase just by being part of a world cup winning squad! – good news for the arsenal)
has it happens though now that england are having a nightmare on the pitch, coupled with owen’s injury has put unwanted exposure on walcott to get a game – something which dein has told sven not to do because if walcott has a stinker of a game (which is most likely as just last year he was marked out of a youth cup game by a 16 year old) this may have a detrimental effect on the lad’s value and might even ruin his career, something which dein is absolutely fretting about.
whatever it all stinks to high heaven and as we all know – even my long suffering wife to whom i constantly drone on about leaving out defoe in the first place could see the flaws of only taking one fit striker, one boy and a couple of crocks.
see you back here in england VERY soon eh lads?
This plan is most likely in the works as it has been reported on for months. I sure hope it goes through as Sven is the dogs bollocks. But if Dein is smart, he’ll ask for Ronaldo as compensation for losing AW.
A lot of simplifications here. Let’s clarify.
1) Florentino Perez did NOT promise Vieira as part of his election big. He had already won his re-election long before the Vieira saga began.
2) Don’t compare what happens at Barcelona to what happens at Madrid. They are different worlds. What the author wrote is 100% true. If Villar Mir were to promise Wenger and not deliver upon getting elected, his position would be entirely unteneble and I doubt he’d last longer than 6 months. And he knows this, so if it is said, I’m forced to believe there’s a lot of substance behind it.
3) Madrid is not old talent “passed it” (nice spelling). Zidane is retiring and Roberto Carlos is almost surely on his way out, along with quite possibly Ronaldo and Michel Salgado. The vast majority of the squad is made up of players under 25, many of them world class.
4) Why is it so hard for some people to believe, especially these self-righteous, indignant Arsenal fans? Much stranger things have happened, I assure you. Yes, he’s done massive amounts at Arsenal, but who can fathom what a man thinks? He’s in his mid to late 50s, he’s been there for 10 years, won titles with them, brought them into a new stadium while bringing them to the Champions’ League final, and established a very solid youth system there which Arsenal will be reaping the rewards from for years to come. Perhaps he feels, much as Vieira did, that it’s time for a change.
5) It’s a golden opportunity for him. There won’t be many chances in his life like this one: having complete and total control, from top to bottom, of a club the size of Real Madrid. Not to mention his huge pay rise and the much larger transfer budget he’d have.
6) The arguments of ‘Why did he sign so and so then?’ are infantile and specious. Just because (if it’s the case) he wants to leave, in no way means that he would actively seek to sabotage Arsenal, does it?
I can’t see this being true, especially the Sven part. I feel if Wenger Leaves The Arsenal They’ll get Martin Jol, I know it would cost, but like Campbell he wouldn’t be able to resist the lure of a bigger club.
I feel dumber for having read this article
Excellent, very funny piece! But not quite as funny as all the people who took it seriously!
This is plain THEOretical and not the REAL story at all. No change at ARSENE all. It is not a case of IF or SVEN It’s W-all cock
Would be funny if it hadn’t all been done before in various forms. To all those people who are arguing it’s believable, please please please agree to bet money on it happening. Preferably with me.
It’s impossible to know if this rumour is true by now.
Many players are acting here. The news was given by a reputated Spanish journalist who leads the most popular sports radio program. The problem is that this station belongs to the strongest media lobby controlling half of Spain, PRISA Group, and this lobby has interest in controlling Real Madrid TV Broadcasting rights, so they are obviously manipulating the information in favor of their allied candidates.
Villar Mir has denied it, Wenger has denied it and only this reputated journalist confirms the deal is done, so many Real Madrid voters have already taken their decision based on this rumour. A good strategy where only the credibility of the journalist is at risk, but who knows at what price. So much money is involved…
If Villar mir wins the election, Wenger will be new Real Madrid coach.
back home already?
told you so,
what a total f***ing farce
time for a total clear out in the FA and mclaren
