I worked for Eric in Shades Bar as a under manager. You will never meet such nice, generous guy like Eric.

I can remember a time when Hibs played Aberdeen in the league cup final. Hibs got beat 3-0 that day and he was gutted for all of the supporters.
In the dining area of shades, all the hibs supporters were dancing and shouting as if they won.. Eric who was not working that night told me from the bar to get the hibbys in order and stop dancing on top of the tables.i was a bit perplexed as i was really busy.
So i shouted and got the situation under control. nice and quiet jukebox off (as it was Sunday we had to keep the noise down).Next thing whilst down the stairs changing a barrel. The rumpus started again all i could hear was singing dancing and the jukebox going even louder..As i walked up the stairs worring what Eric was going to think.. Low and behold Eric with a Hibs flag dancing and singing ontop of the table. i just looked at him and he gave me a wink. some man..

Some great feedback for you on the article at Hibs.net Tom, seems like Erich is still remembered very fondly by those who knew him and watched him play:

We absolutely loved Erich in my house. My 13/14/15/16 year-old sister was crazy about him and she must have had every picture taken of him on her wall. After every home game, my brother and/or I had to take our wee sister behind the stand at ER to wait for Erich to come out and autograph her programme.

The most impressive thing about him was that he was one of the first Hibs players who clearly had no special respect or fear of playing the Old Firm. There have been many since but he was one of the first.

I still remember him fondly now and coach laddies in New Jersey to play like him.

The lot of ex-footballers isn't all sunny holidays and film careers. Remember Neil Webb, a major star of the later-80s and early-90s, is working as a postman. Numerous others sunk their testimonial earnings into businesses, some successful (usually pubs), some not so (see Willie Irvine's excellent autobiography - "Together Again") in an attempt to forge a future for the family.

Indeed I stumbled on an article by Gary Imlach about his father on another football forum (can't find the link now) and was enthralled by the crassness of the Scottish FA in their treatment of some of their former stars, and the heartbreak this caused the late Stewart Imlach and his family.

I ordered ?My Father and Other Working Class Heroes? of Amazon a few days ago, and look forward to reading it.
