Marching Orders For Robbo At The Hawthorns

September 18th, 2006 by Alan Hylands

West Brom have parted company with manager Bryan Robson by “mutual consent” after finally losing patience with results under the former England captain.

Robson was a surprise replacement for Gary Megson in November 2004 and despite saving the club from relegation in that 2004/2005 season he then took them down the following year. Results in the Championship have been mixed with three wins, two defeats and three draws so far keeping Albion in 9th place in the table which hasn’t impressed chairman Jeremy Peace.

With the West Bromwich Albion board not likely to be content with anything short of instant promotion back into the upper echelons of the Premiership it has come as no surprise that Robson finally found his head on the chopping block. The financial rewards of playing in the top flight outweight even the prestige elements these days and as such West Brom can’t afford to not make the jump straight back up.

Club chairman Jeremy Peace said: “In view of the results since early 2006, it’s been decided a change is necessary if the club is to achieve its aims.

“This is a very important time for the club with promotion a priority and the best way forward is to make a change.”

Robson’s assistant Nigel Pearson will take charge of team affairs while a permanent replacement is searched for.

Great player that Robbo undoubtedly was, I’ve never really rated him as a manager. He seems to acumilate good players and then not really know what do to with them. Remember the beginning of last season when he had loads of strikers? If memory serves, he had Ellington, Kanu, Earnshaw, Kamara and Horsfield and yet had no idea what his best partnership was and pretty much refused to play Earnshaw - despite his good form in the previous season - for no discernable reason. This season they have probably the best squad in the Championship (though Birmingham’s is pretty decent) and should get automatic promotion at least, but Robbo didn’t look like he would be the man to get it for them. I worry for him, though. Will he get another job after this?

I couldn’t believe it when West Brom gave him the job in the first place never mind him get another job after leaving this one.

Always felt like he was completely out of his depth at Boro and with yo-yoing up and down the divisions he never really proved me wrong. Liked to flash the cash but as you say, had little tactical nous anout what to do with the players once he had them in.
