Melbourne Victory In The Driving Seat Down Under
October 3rd, 2006 by David KennedyThe Victory are well and truly in the driving seat in the A League. Six
wins from six has been a dream start for Merrick’s merry troops who were
this week boosted by the return of Brazilian forward Fred, who made this
mark and scored the opener in the most recent win over fellow high
flyer’s the Queensland Roar.
Comprehensive victories over Perth Glory (a) 2-0, 3-0 (a) to the
struggling New Zealand Knights followed up by this superb showing
trouncing Queensland 4-1, in front of just over 25,000 at Telstra Dome.
Due to the popularity of the Victory their current home Olympic Park is
not big enough for the thousands who follow their team week in week out,
so Telstra Dome has been reinstated as their home ground for five of the
remaining seven home games.
Former Millwall and Rangers and current Melbourne captain Kevin Muscat
has been scoring goals for fun, he has six goals already this season and
is currently sitting on top of the all time goalscorers of the A League
since its formation last season. Having said that five of this six goals
have come from the penalty spot, but that’s the opponents fault for
committing so many fouls inside the penalty area.
The A league has also been boosted by the big signings happening in
Adelaide with former Brazilian World Cup hero Romario signing on a month
guest contract, while Sydney have also gone big with the capture of
former Sheffield Wednesday Italian stallion Benito Carbone on a similar
basis.
The next game sees the Mighty Victory travel to the Newcastle Jets in
New South Wales, Melbourne will certainly fancy their chances at making
the magnificent seven as Newcastle are struggling bigtime at the bottom
of the table..
Stay tuned and Go the Victory!
