Chelsea - The Reverse Midas Touch?
November 28th, 2006 by Cathy ThompsonWhat is it about Chelsea these days? They seem to be destroying the talents of numerous footballers year in year out and nobody is talking about it. Firstly we have Shaun Wright-Phillips one of Englands up and coming youngsters who can’t be touched in the Premiership yet when he makes his “dream” move to Chelsea he disappears off all radar. Is it reaching your peak too early or it just that Chelsea as a team tend to push footballers out of all recognition unless they make a big impact in the squad at the beginning. God knows if your a fans favourite like Lampard then you can be assured of a starting place each week.
Next there is all the recent hype about Shevchenko being the biggest flop in the premiership and that replacements are already being lined up by Mourinho. Now maybe its just me but this man was a hero at Milan and a hero in Europe deemed an unstoppable scoring machine yet when he arrives at Chelsea he encounters problems. Chelsea seem unable to provide a valid reason for the players lacklustre appearances but it has been reported that as far as Mourinho is concerned he has done everything he can to get the best from Shevchenko and now no longer feels obliged to persist with Abramovich’s friend.
Im just curious as to why a proven player like Sheva now at his peak cannot fit in at Chelsea. It may be that Mourinho himself is to blame as he is a manager who lacks patience and his petulance provokes players into ambivalence. Ballack another international superstar has struggled to make a major impact in the team with many pundits saying that the team is all important at Chelsea and not the individual. It will be interesting to see at the end of the season whether Mourinho’s tactics and team beliefs pay off but for now if I was one of the worlds footballing elite I would know exactly which club I would not be moving to come January.
