The Race to Deadline Day

Speculation over which players might move clubs during the January transfer window has been building up since the second the Summer window closed at the end of August. Although many transfers have already been finalised, many of the deals which have been mooted throughout January are yet to come to fruition. As we enter the final week of the transfer window there are sure to be all manner of transfers occurring before the deadline. Whether they are high profile switches that set new records for extravagant spending, money saving loans or last second business that flies completely under the radar. Clubs will be looking to bring in players for all sorts of reasons and with the clock quickly ticking down what better time to look at which players could make a dramatic move in the time that remains. So far Premier League clubs have spend less than £20million on new signings with the majority of that amount being spent by Newcastle United on forward Papiss Demba Cisse and Chelsea on England defender Gary Cahill. With money being held tightly in pockets here are the ten deals which we feel could possibly go through in the next seven days.

Carlos Tevez (Forward)

Current Club – Manchester City

Linked Clubs – Paris Saint Germain, Inter Milan, AC Milan

The Argentine is already out of the Manchester City squad following his refusal to warm up during a Champions League game earlier in the season. City boss Roberto Mancini refuses to ever select Tevez again whilst he is in charge leaving the forward with no option but to find a new club. Negotiations have broke down with both PSG and AC Milan so far, and with the window quickly closing City may be prepared to initially loan him to another club.

Alex (Defender)

Current Club – Chelsea

Linked Clubs – Paris Saint Germain, Queens Park Rangers

Having been placed on the transfer list by Andre Villas Boas earlier in the season the only question which remains is where will Alex decide his future lies. Having agreed fees with both PSG and QPR, Alex has the choice to remain in London and the Premier League or join former manager, Carlo Ancelotti’s revolution at PSG. The impression is that Alex will snub the Premier League strugglers and join Ancelotti’s title challengers in the next few days.

Will there be a deal? 10

Ravel Morrison (Forward)

Current Club – Manchester United

Linked Clubs – Manchester City, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Roma

Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have told close colleagues that Morrison is the best player he has ever seen for his age, some statement given the talent Ferguson has brought through at United. Morrison though only has six months remaining on his deal and is being advised to look around for the right contract offer. United have already rejected multiple offers from Newcastle and are aware of wider interest in the youngster, but with Fergie at the helm you feel that if he truly wants to keep Morrison then he will end up signing a new contract.

Will there be a deal? 4

Nikica Jelavic (Forward)

Current Club – Rangers

Linked Clubs – Liverpool, Southampton

Jelavic has set alight the SPL during the past couple of seasons attracting admiring glances from high profile clubs south of the boarder. His father is quoted as saying he would like his son to move to Liverpool, but would Jelavic be able to transfer his ability from Scottish football to the high standards at the top of the Premier League? A possibility of a move is more likely in the summer but if Liverpool feel they need a striker now the deal may move forward.

Will there be a deal? 6

Andrey Arshavin (Forward)

Current Club – Arsenal

Linked Clubs – Zenit St. Petersburg, Lazio

The Russian forward arrived in London three years ago in a blaze of glory, the missing piece from Arsene Wenger’s perfect puzzle. However after a promising start at the club, Arshavin hasn’t proved to be the player everyone at Arsenal expected. Following the fans booing Wenger’s decision to bring on Arshavin against Manchester United, and the players reported unpopularity in the dressing room, now might be the time for the club and player to cut their losses and move on.

Will there be a deal? 5

Esteban Granero (Midfielder)

Current Club – Real Madrid

Linked Clubs – Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Paris Saint Germain

Due to a lack of opportunities under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, Granero has been granted the opportunity to leave the club on loan for the remainder of the season. With a whole host of clubs interested in securing the Spaniard’s services he has the choice to move where he wants if he decides his future lies away from Madrid. Liverpool are thought to be the front runners if Granero decides to move thanks to their growing Spanish speaking contingent.

Will there be a deal? 7

Willian (Attacking Midfielder)

Current Club – Shakhtar Donetsk

Linked Clubs – Chelsea

Having already had a £16.6million bid turned down for the Brazilian forward Chelsea are thought to be preparing an increased offer in order to bring Willian to the club before the window closes. It is thought that if Chelsea increase their offer, along with the players desire to move and the good relationship between the two clubs, then Willian will officially become a Chelsea player before the deadline arrives.

Will there be a deal? 10

Chris Samba (Defender)

Current Club – Blackburn Rovers

Linked Clubs – Paris Saint Germain, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal

Samba handed in a transfer request earlier in the window such is the giant defenders wish to move away from relegation threatened Blackburn Rovers. The request was rejected with manager Steve Kean unwelcoming of any offers for his club captain. Any deal to take the player away from Ewood Park seems to be dead in the water, but with Blackburn’s financial problems lurking in the background a huge offer could tempt Rovers to sell a player who no longer wishes to remain at the club.

Will there be a deal? 3

Jordan Rhodes (Forward)

Current Club – Huddersfield Town

Linked Clubs – Southampton, Wigan Athletic, West Ham United

Huddersfield and their manager Lee Clark have so far rejected any and all approaches from clubs looking to purchase the young Scotland international. The 21 year old forward is the current top scorer in League Two, having scored an impressive 26 goals. Interest in the player is high, with teams from the Championship and Premier League lining up to take his services. Having already turned down offers ranging from £5-8million it is unlikely Rhodes will leave during this window, but a summer move is an almost certainty.

Will there be a deal? 4

Daniele De Rossi (Midfielder)

Current Club – Roma

Linked Clubs – Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid

There is always a surprise deal in the January transfer window and with Italian international De Rossi yet to agree a new deal with Roma could they seek to offload him in case he decides to leave for free in the summer. De Rossi would have the choice of any major club in world football, its thought that if he were to leave his hometown club it would be to test himself in the Premier League. It is more likely De Rossi will sign a new deal including a minimum fee release clause, but if negotiations continue to stall a last minute move remains a possibility.

Will there be a deal? 1

Like everyone else I will be watching Sky Sports News on Deadline Day enjoying the circus of transfers and last second deals. I hope that some of my suggestions become reality or I will be forced to issue an apology on the 1st of February.  At least I haven’t told you all that I have just seen Ronaldo house hunting in Rochdale or Kaka waiting for a taxi outside the Riverside Stadium.  Although I must admit these fan sightings are my favourite part of any Deadline Day!

  1. Good piece Richard. Arshavin simply has to leave the club, his performances are dire and devoid of any motivation, it’s bloody embarassing. I have a feeling Samba won’t leave unexpectedly and will stay for now, but eventually who knows? He hasn’t been consistently happy for some time now. What a hole that would leave in Blackburn’s squad.

Rhodes looks a talent as well, but for his career it would be good to see him duke out the rest of the season. One of the most interesting names you mentioned was Morrison. He seems to be somewhat of an enigma and it would be a blow for United fans who want to see an obvious talent prosper, especially if he becomes brilliant at another club. Perhaps Purple nose can mould him into the Fergie image…

  2. Cheers Jack. I agree Arshavin is a waste of space. I can’t remember ever seeing someone so consistently bored on a football pitch. Why not just hand in a transfer request as its obvious he doesn’t want to be there. Typical Wenger refusing to admit when he’s made a mistake.
I think Rhodes will stay until the end of the year, he looks like a proper finisher, but a lot depends on which club takes a risk on him.
I think United should get shot of Morrison if he is asking for the reported wages. Imagine Pedro at Barcelona asking for that when he was breaking into the team, it wouldn’t happen. It would be a shame as he does look a player, but how many players have looked amazing at 18 and turned out to be awful!
